TWO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WINS

AND TWO OTHER RACE WINS

Cooper Ray wins the NY state Junior 17-18 road race at the Balloon Festival race.

Cooper just recently switched teams from Toga to the CRCA Junior Development Team and is currently attending a cycling camp for Juniors in Allentown , PA.

Juan Aracena wins the Cat 4 Watermelon Crit on June 6th. This was Juan’s 3rd win of this season! I have known Juan for a long time and he raced mountain bikes when I first met him years ago. He took a little break from cycling (3 years), but now he is back with a bang!! Juan is definitely a sprinter, but he does not shy away from going on a hilly leg- breaking training ride midweek! Juan has worked extremely hard this spring to get back into cycling and now he is more competitive than ever and coaching him towards a whole new level is as rewarding as winning!!

John Raheb is a similar type rider as Juan, very driven and focused! Both riders want to win and both can, but they have a positive attitude and if they do not win this weekend, they move on and try again the next weekend! That is a quality in a bike racer that is invaluable and reflects the love to ride their bikes. It is a passion and a lifestyle; winning is a bonus!!

John Raheb did win this weekend - the 45+ NJ State road race. A goal he set for himself a year ago, when he took second in this same race. That is something a bike racer sometimes forgets - setting goals! It is very easy to start racing in March week in and out. Getting very focused on races that are supposed to be training races and by the time the real season starts, feeling burnt out! My point is; train, race training races for training and then do more important races or goal events - little recovery and train some more, do some training races while you train and build to more important events again! You can race 8-9 months of the year, but your form and fitness will go in cycles and with a little coaching and help you may hit the goal events in the right part of the cycle. Structure and base is what is required the bulk of the time throughout year. This is something that is part of every weeks training program but easily overlooked. Eddy Merckx once said” to be good you have to ride your bike “he meant time on the bike or endurance miles!

Set a reasonable goal, train towards your goal and try to achieve, then move on to the next one, the world does not stop if you miss, look forward and let that second place motivate to greater things!!

Michael Beckerman is another hard working athlete and extremely focused on what he is not so good at. Michael knows he can time trial , but he had not won a mass start event until this past Sunday when he soloed to victory at Floyd Bennett Field in the 3-4 race . He has been close before, but never pulled off a win. This was not only a milestone for Michael, but also a first big win for his FGX team. His team mates were instrumental in this win and Patrick Littlefield placed 3rd in the very same race which added to the success. Patrick had also gotten 3rd two days before in a smaller race in Long Island. Since I coached this team, every single guy has worked extremely hard and just been short off a top result until now. This will boost the moral of the whole team and I think Michael’s win will lead to a breakthrough for the whole team! I might coach each guy individually, but when you are out there racing, it becomes a team effort. The FGX guys are really a perfect example of that!

Kim Aspholm won the Harriman duathlon overall women's division, taking 6 minutes of her previous time at the same race last fall!

Congratulations to our 5 winners this week!
