Driven
by Roger

What does it mean to be driven? That is an interesting
question.” My definition of driven is to succeed no matter what”. In sports
and in cycling especially it might be a long road to any type of fame and
it would be very easy to give up. What drives you? Is motivation the same
thing as being driven? What is the difference between driven and obsessed?
I think these are matters or questions we should ask ourselves
once in awhile.
To be a successful athlete I think we first need to figure out
what really drives us. Competition is what drives me to even ride a bike.
To be competitive in any race is what drives me to train, not the roads,
hills, to see how many hours I can ride, feeling fit, looking fit or riding
with my friends (well maybe a little). If I would not be competitive I
would probably not even race. In a race I am extremely driven to win. Every
race I start, I feel that I have a chance to win and there is no limitation
why I could not.
This might not be a realistic way of thinking and that is my
point here. There is a fine line that is very easy to cross and driven
becomes an obsession. This is when you do not train or race smart or mind
takes over your body. Very often you think you are not training enough if
you are not winning races and your drive gives you tunnel vision. “Driven”
is the mental part of the game and really brings out both the mental
strengths and weaknesses in an athlete.
The drive is put to the test every day, the actual drive
is not a just a day-to-day thing though. I think that is motivation. It is
the long term plan or picture that fuels the drive. Watching the Tour or
getting a new bike is motivation. Winning a race motivates you to win
another one. The drive is what got there!
In sports winning is the ultimate price, but that is not the
only thing that should drive you in fitness and sports. Personal achievements
like improved times, placing better than before or just be able to finish
the Sunday morning group ride. Goals are what should drive you. When you
reach one, set a new one, raise the bar!
Be driven, but be open to second opinions and common sense.
That is when you achieve a balance between your body and mind.
